Tobea Brink
Biographical info

Tobea Brink was born in Riversdal in the Southern Cape on May 18 1962. She grew up on a farm in this area. She matriculated at Langenhoven High School in Riversdal in 1979. She obtained a BA degree at the University of Stellenbosch with Afrikaans and Dutch, English and Psychology and an Honours in Afrikaans (cum laude). She was part of the Literature Laboratory that was run by Lina Spies and later Sheila Cussons.

A few years later, after a spell in Australia and a short stay in the USA, she read a multi-disciplinary postgraduate degree in African Studies at the University of Cape Town. She was subsequently offered a position as writer in the Ruimteland series and she was co-writer of the primary school series. She later obtained a Masters degree in Jungian Studies (with distinction) with specific reference to Cultural Psychology at the University of Western Sydney.

Her debut, Die Hemelklip, was published by Kwela Books in 2007.

Did you know?

· Die Hemelklip was nominated for the Jan Rabie/Rapport Prize for innovative literature in 2008.
· Tobea’s husband, Chris, was the rector of Stellenbosch University for five years. They are currently living in Newcastle, England, where he is rector of Newcastle University.
