Louis Esterhuizen was born in 1955 in Welkom in the Free State.
He matriculated in 1973 at Hentie Cilliers High School in Virginia. He received a BA-degree from the University of the Free State in 1983 and an Honours degree from UNISA. Thereafter he taught at schools in Bloemfontein, Bethlehem, Pretoria, and Rondebosch. Louis is currently the manager of Protea Boekwinkel in Stellenbosch.
Louis made his poetry debut in 1986 with the collection called Stilstuipe, followed by eight more collections.

||Louis married poet-writer-painter Marlise Joubert in 2001 (author of collections such as Domus, Klipkus and Oranje Meraai.
||Together with Henning Pieterse Louis is the founder of the "Bekgevegte" - playful poetic "fights".
||Stilstuipe was on the shortlist for the Rapport Prize.
||Wat die water onthou was awarded the Protea Prize for Poetry in 2011. It was also nominated for the UJ Prize for Literature and the ATKV Woordveertjie for Poetry (2011).
||Esterhuizen is also involved with the website, Versindaba.co.za, a popular site dedicated to poetry. It is administrated by his wife, Marlise Joubert.
