Pieter Jacobus (PJ) Haasbroek was born on 30 June 1943 in Pretoria. In 1954, the family moved to the Petrusburg district where his father had bought a farm. In 1961 he matriculated at the local high school. He started his BA Degree at the University of the Free State in 1963, where he majored in Political Science and Economics. After this, he also completed an Honours Degree in Economics.
In 1967 he started working at the Planning Department and completed his MA Degree in 1968. Also in 1968, PJ was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Zululand. He was awarded his Doctorate in 1984 at the University of Pretoria.
In 1984 he was appointed as professor in Economics at the same university, where he worked until 1987.
In 1988 he became a group economist at Barloworld, where he worked until his retirement in 2004.
His first volume of short stories, Heupvuur, was published in 1974 and in 1975 it was awarded the Eugne Marais Prize. His other volumes of short stories are Roofvis (1975), Skrikbewind (1976) and Verby die vlakte (1982).
He also published a novella (Die jaar nul) and two youth books (Op soek na die Johanna and Die pad na Maputzi). Die ander vennoot, published in 2009 by Human & Rousseau, is his third novel.
