Prof Hendrik Johannes Jacobus Reynders was Dean of the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Economic and Political Sciencesfrom 1962 to 1973. He is described as a pioneer in many fields, but was particularly known for his contributions in the field of management science. Prof Reynders completed his BCom and MCom degrees at UP in 1945 and 1946 respectively. He obtained a bursary to continue his studies at the Harvard Graduate School for Business Administration and completed his MBA in 1949. He studied part time at UP and completed his DCom degree in 1955. He launched his career in 1941 when he accepteda position in the civil service. In 1943, he was appointed as a lecturer in business economics at UP. He occupied this position until 1947 when he left for England to commence his studies at Harvard. On his return in 1950, he was appointed as managementassistant, and later technical advisor, to the Socio-economic Commission for the Development of Bantu Areas. In 1953, he accepted a position with the Council for Trade and Industry. He occupied this position until 1957 when he was appointed as asenior lecturer in the Department of Economics at UP. Two years later he was promoted to head of the Department of Business Economics and was appointed Director of the Institute for Business Administrators. In 1962, he became Dean of the Facultyof Economic and Political Sciences. He occupied this position until he accepted the position of Executive Director of the South African Federated Chamber of Industries. In 1979, he was appointed as Chairman of the National Manpower Commission.During his term as Dean, he was appointed Chairman of the Bureau for Financial Analysis. Prof Reynders received awards from various organisations for his research, among others, from the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns and theInstitute for Personnel Management. In 1973, he was elected as a fellow of the International Management Academy. He served on various boards and was, among others, Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry into the price and profit margins of agriculturalimplements and parts, the minting of money, the Commission of Inquiry into South Africa’s export trade and Co-ordinator of the Committee for Export Incentives. He was also a member of the Economic Advisory Council for the First Minister (1973 to1985), the Scientific Advisory Council for the First Minister (1981 to 1987) and the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM), the Productivity Institute and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Prof Reynders was also President of the Economic Association of South Africa from 1973 to 1975. In 1987, he received the DCom (honoris causa) degree from UP. Prof Reynderswas author or co-author of more than 70 scientific articles and also a number of well-known books on business economics and economics, including Die Taak van die Bedryfsleier, Die Ekonomiese Lewe van Suid-Afrika, Inleiding tot die Bedryfsekonomie,Finansiële Bestuur and Die Investeringsbesluit, to mention but a few.
