’n Lewe met boeke | Biography
Human & Rousseau
Koos Human’s innovative and visionary contribution to South African book publishing is widely recognised. He is regarded as the first truly professional publisher of Afrikaans books for the general trade in South Africa. Now he shares his 40 years of experience with books, against the background of the literary, political, cultural and social climate at the time. The reader is reminded just what odds publishers and authors had to overcome in a time of draconian censorship laws in the 1960s and 1970s and a repressive political order.
Koos Human’s contribution to maintaining the integrity of the publishing industry in this sad time is considerable. Through his wide reading in world literature and his fine attunement to quality writing, he was able to give valuable guidance to some of South Africa’s finest writers, and he is sometimes called the godfather of the ‘sestigers’ (André Brink, Breyten Breytenbach, Etienne Leroux, Jan Rabie and others).
Koos’s exceptional business acumen is evident from such divergent business activities as persuading SJA de Villiers to allow him to publish Cook and Enjoy/Kook and geniet to the spadework he did with Bertellsman to enable the founding of Leserskring/Leisure Hour by Nasionale Pers. His passion, and also his humour, is evident from this short but engrossing autobiographical work.
