Human & Rousseau
This story was originally published in 1956 in Sarie Marais. It was published in book form for the first time in 1961 and became an immediate hit. The first edition was reprinted nine times before a new edition was brought out in 1978.
In the year 1904, Annemarie Herbst arrives in a small Boland town to teach at the seminary. She boards with three spinster sisters, who have been forced to take her in because of financial problems. Meulenhof is an old Cape Dutch farm house, all that is left of the Vermeulen family’s past grandeur. In nine letters to her boyfriend, Annemarie tells how Sarah, the oldest sister, broke off her engagement and, through her pride and stubbornness brought her and her sisters’ lives to a halt for fifteen years.
