Our History



Kwela Books was founded in 1994 and specialises in African writing.

Its aim is to develop the extent of South African literature and to document those stories that deserve to be told. Many of Kwela’s authors are internationally published, and include Achmat Dangor, AHM Scholtz, Rayda Jacobs, Antjie Krog, Mary Watson, Niq Mhlongo and Elbie Lötter.

Kwela Books also publishes narrative non-fiction, mainly in the form of autobiographies and travel books.

NB Publishers have six imprints: Tafelberg, Human & Rousseau, Queillerie, Pharos, Kwela and Best Books.

Human & Rousseau was founded in 1959 with the aim to publish and promote Afrikaans books in particular.
