19 July 2024

Kwela Books is excited to reveal the cover of the forthcoming publication by African literary icon, and award-winning writer, Zukiswa Wanner. Her latest novel – Love, Marry, Kill – is set to be released in September 2024. This is Wanner at her best and showcases her flair for writing captivating fiction. The East African edition, to be published by Jahazi Press, and the publication in West Africa by Masobe Books will also be released in September this year. Kwela is proud to be the local publisher of this exciting new title.

Love, Marry, Kill is the perfect book club read. It’s humorous, a little dark, relatable and an authentic portrayal of relationships. This novel shows off Wanner’s skill at perfectly balancing a charming humour with the darker, more serious, moments. Kwela publisher Stevlyn Vermeulen is excited to have Zukiswa Wanner on Kwela Books’ publication list again. “I am ecstatic that we’re able to publish her latest offering. Love Marry Kill is a rollercoaster read. It has been a great privilege to work with Zukiswa.”

Zukiswa Wanner is the author of novels The Madams (2006), Behind Every Successful Man (2008), Men of the South (2010) and London Cape Town Joburg (2014); four children's books; a travel book; a satirical nonfiction work and a long form essay on Palestine titled ‘Vignettes of a People in an Apartheid State’. She is a 2022 Moi University African Cluster Centre Fellow, 2018 JIAS Fellow and 2016 DIVA (Danish International Visiting Artist). Wanner's accolades include being selected among 2020's New African ‘100 Most Influential Africans’ and Brittle Paper’s ‘Literary Person of the Year’ in the same year. She has edited three multinational anthologies and has contributed to a number of others. Wanner's work has been translated into Portuguese, French, Spanish and Kiswahili and she has given several keynote addresses. You can hear her distinctive laugh in an African city near you, without notice.

Love, Marry, Kill will be published on 2 September and will be available nationwide at all good bookstores and online. Zukiswa will be travelling around the country to launch the book, kicking off at Open Book Festival in Cape Town.

About the novel:

In South Africa, homicides are sometimes for insurance. But sometimes the insurance is just an added bonus. In Bryanston, Johannesburg, one couple has loved, married and is plodding on after surviving a betrayal. In Fourways, Johannesburg, a man is holding on to a secret that he cannot share with his wife.
Then on a rainy summer’s night, as if conspired by the universe, the lives of the two couples are forever changed. An instant connection leads to a safe and healing love, one that not even a designated WhatsApp family group or attempts at seduction can extinguish. But love is messy and life is complicated.
And when a stylish man with a prosthetic right arm shows up brandishing a .44 Magnum, the lovers may just discover how some great love stories end. That sometimes ‘till death do us part’ has a different meaning to different people.
